Harmony Review
January 30th, 2008 Filed Under Episode Reviews
John and Rodney are offworld helping out another world. Their help is called upon by the royalty of the settlement to help the would-be queen on a quest to the ruins, to ensure her place as queen. Turns out the would-be queen is a 13 year old girl called Harmony.
Along the way to the ruins John, Rodney and Harmony run into the Genii. It turns out one of the slightly jealous older sister’s has got a contract out Harmony and the Genii are doing their best to get rid of the girl to make way for the sister. As things go the ruins are actually an Ancient piece of technology which uses drones to guard against people without the Ancient gene. Rodney, John and Harmony make it to the ruins, the device gets used, the sister gets found out, and it’s hapily ever after.
On the the review. I was perfectly happy just watching this episode. It was entertaining, and after all, isn’t that what TV’s about? But still this wasn’t enough for me. Yet another Atlantis episode which I really wasn’t happy with. Though that’s not saying it didn’t have any positives for me.
The Good
You can never have enough Rodney and John banter, they’re great together onscreen! And with little Harmony always outwitting the good doctor, he of superior intellect, it was a joy to watch. Seeing John use his military skills is always fun too, and something I’d like to see more of.
The Bad
Sadly, as has been the case recently, my list of “bad” things far outweigh the good.
The main plot didn’t interest me whatsoever. Sure I watched it for the full hour and didn’t flick channels, but there was no suspense, there was no feeling of “will they or won’t they”, and it came as no surprise that the ruins were actually a piece of Ancient technology? Really… oh yes they were!
The use of the Genii felt cheap to me. They were there as guns for hire, mindless merceneries, when we know there’s a lot more to them. They could have picked out any other set of people, some people form nearby or rival settlements, but no they didn’t. Shame.
Whilst it was great seeing John and Rodney, alone, I miss the team interaction which made SG-1 so popular in its hay-day, and that made Atlantis a joy to watch way back in season 1. Thankfully Joe and David do have a genuine chemistry onscreen which makes them a joy to watch.
Sadly I didn’t gel with Harmony. Whereas in Childhood’s End we had relatively cute and charming kids, which were equally as cute with Rodney, Harmony just felt downright annoying and bratty to me. And yes I know she was meant to be that, but it was getting to the point where I just couldn’t bare to see her onscreen.
The ending was predictable and even the revelation of the painting didn’t make me laugh, as it has done for other people who have seen this episode. This was yet another disappointing filler episode. Atlantis, please TRY HARDER.
TV Squad and Syfy Portal weren’t nearly as cruel and seem genuinely happy with this episode.
