Carter Out, Woolsey In

February 6th, 2008   Filed Under Stargate: Atlantis News

As production on the fifth season of Stargate: Atlantis begins, casting rumors have now seemed to have been made fact. It was widely known that Amanda Tapping would be stepping down as Samantha Carter, the commander of Atlantis. It’s now been confirmed that the new commander of Atlantis will be IOA official, Richard Woolsey, played by Richard Picardo.

I don’t know about you, but frankly I hate this idea. Well hate would be a strong word, but it’s very close to what I’m feeling on this. I’d rather have a rank outsider than Woolsey in commanding Atlantis, as it’s already been made clear what an utterly awful leader he’d make. He’s got no leadership skills.

Obviously I haven’t seen the last few episodes of the fourth season of Atlanits, which could make it so that the IOA are forced to come in and take control of the Atlantis expedition, but again I think that’s an awful idea.

Though at the same time I’m in agreement that John shouldn’t be made commander; again he hasn’t got the right credentials and I’d miss him as the action man. Someone like Weir was a good idea - an outsider but with the leadership skills to be able to take on such a post and have respect from the people under her. Woolsey certainly won’t be doing that.

Also the minor point that I find his character completely unbearable again makes me hate this idea. Well I’ll still be watching, with gritted teeth.

And back on track with new Atlantis casting news Amanda Tapping, Michael Shanks and Paul McGillion will all be appearing in a handful of episodes in the fifth season too, so maybe it won’t be all too bad!

I definitely will not want to watch any episodes where Wolsey will be running Atlantis. He just is not an individual who would be a good leader. I think fans will be turned off, and will not watch the show.

Well see, i’m open to change. But right from the get go this feels like an awful idea. Currently i’m watching Atlantis out of a sense of loyalty, i’m not really enjoying it at all.

well i think that wolsey is a very bad choice for base commander they need someone that is willing to give people alot of slack and know how hard it is out there someone like jack or hammond but deffently not wolsey, wolsey is a very bad choice

I have to disagree with you on this - just think of the opportunities for character development and conflicts with Woolsey in command. You’re right - he isn’t a great leader (yet), but Robert Picardo has already made Woolsey a multi-layered character, with a likable sort at the core, so I think it is a great setup for amusing and thoughtful episodes to come, with great potential for character growth.

I get that there’s a chance for development and conflict, but for me, Woolsey has always been a very one sided character. I’ve not seen anything in him that interests me, and every single episode he is in, infuriates me.

I’m going to be watching, but … just out of loyalty.
