The Truth
March 26th, 2008 Filed Under Stargate: The Ark of Truth
I can safely say that most of the world of Stargate fans have seen The Ark of Truth. So what did you think of it?
Sadly, my opinion hasn’t changed from my first viewing a few months ago. It was entertaining enough, however it did feel a bit rushed and some characters were left out in the cold with nothing to do. That character being Teal’c. He was the token muscle in the movie, and sure that’s what he has been in a lot of the series, but I thought they’d use him a bit more intelligently.
The revelation of the use of the replicators was a twist. I’m not sure whether I liked it or not. Part of me liked it because, next to the Goa’uld, the replicators were the best villain the Stargate ‘verse has produced. Well maybe they are the best villains, and by bringing them back here, TPTB have put their hands up and admitted that it was a bad idea getting rid of them. However the replicator/terminator scene? A little bit cringeworthy, as well as Cameron’s slo-mo jump into/away from the fireball.
Talking of fireballs, was anyone else a little disappointed with the FX and sets? I know that Stargate had some of the best FX in TV and with the movie having a slightly bigger budget I was hoping that maybe they’d spend that much more on the FX because, let’s face it, they are important on this show. They still felt like TV budget FX. And the sets? Oh dear! Some of them still look like “sets” as opposed to other worlds and other planets. Is it the lighting? I don’t know, but the rubble ridden Dakara looked like someone had just set that up in a warehouse, which is what it probably was!
The final showdown with Adria was quite cool, though the use of the Ark of Truth to make everything right in the world still felt far too easy for me. Again, possibly because it was rushed.
It’s a shame. Sure I was entertained for a couple of hours, but as a long, LONG time Stargate fan, I feel a bit cheated. I’m hoping Continuum does something more for me.

TV’s Sanctuary will be a very Different Beast
March 26th, 2008 Filed Under Sanctuary News
I’m sure most of you will have seen Amanda Tapping in the web only TV series she starred, and produced, Sanctuary. It’s going to be making a move to the small screen, well bigger than your average computer screen, but smaller than a movie screen - TV.
The Sci-Fi channel ordered 13 episodes back in January, and Amanda will be reprising her role as Dr. Helen Magnus. Something that is a little surprising is that the TV series will be different to the web broadcast series. They’ve reshot the pilot and here’s what Amanda had to say about it,
Our pilot that we’re now going to start shooting is very different from what you’ve seen on the Web. But [Magnus] is still this crazy character. She’s 157 years old, and she’s very eccentric and very sexy and very unapologetic. I love it.
So not that much has been let loose there. It’ll be interesting to see how different it will be. Maybe the web broadcast episode was just a “test run” for the series. With the feedback they’ve gathered from the initial, limited, broadcast the Sanctuary the masses will see may be an improved product. But does anybody else feel like they’ve cheated doing it this way?

More Ark of Truth Reviews
March 12th, 2008 Filed Under Stargate: The Ark of Truth
some more reviews for The Ark of Truth are piling in. Film.com have positive, if rather short and superficial review. As does The Star.com. Monsters and Critics have a much fuller review and really seemed to have enjoyed the movie.
Also in the run up to the release of The Ark of Truth, the cast are on the rounds doing interviews across the web. Chris Judge has been interviewed at Media Blvd, where he not only talks about The Ark of Truth, a little about Continuum, but also about his long mooted project with fellow Stargate actor Michael Shanks, Rage of Angels. Rage of Angels tells the story of Gabriel and Lucifer with Judge playing Gabriel and Shanks playing Lucifer. There’s due to be a two hour pilot, but Chris is pretty tight lipped on this project.
Movieweb hasĀ a pretty in-depth interview with the aforementioned Michael Shanks. The topic of conversation is firmly fixed on Ark and bits on Continuum.
