The Truth

I can safely say that most of the world of Stargate fans have seen The Ark of Truth. So what did you think of it?
Sadly, my opinion hasn’t changed from my first viewing a few months ago. It was entertaining enough, however it did feel a bit rushed and some characters were left out in the cold with nothing to do. That character being Teal’c. He was the token muscle in the movie, and sure that’s what he has been in a lot of the series, but I thought they’d use him a bit more intelligently.
The revelation of the use of the replicators was a twist. I’m not sure whether I liked it or not. Part of me liked it because, next to the Goa’uld, the replicators were the best villain the Stargate ‘verse has produced. Well maybe they are the best villains, and by bringing them back here, TPTB have put their hands up and admitted that it was a bad idea getting rid of them. However the replicator/terminator scene? A little bit cringeworthy, as well as Cameron’s slo-mo jump into/away from the fireball.
Talking of fireballs, was anyone else a little disappointed with the FX and sets? I know that Stargate had some of the best FX in TV and with the movie having a slightly bigger budget I was hoping that maybe they’d spend that much more on the FX because, let’s face it, they are important on this show. They still felt like TV budget FX. And the sets? Oh dear! Some of them still look like “sets” as opposed to other worlds and other planets. Is it the lighting? I don’t know, but the rubble ridden Dakara looked like someone had just set that up in a warehouse, which is what it probably was!
The final showdown with Adria was quite cool, though the use of the Ark of Truth to make everything right in the world still felt far too easy for me. Again, possibly because it was rushed.
It’s a shame. Sure I was entertained for a couple of hours, but as a long, LONG time Stargate fan, I feel a bit cheated. I’m hoping Continuum does something more for me.
