Torri’s Out for Five
February 11th, 2008 Filed Under Stargate: Atlantis News
You know after the announcement of Robert Picardo being the new commander of Atlantis for season 5, I was looking for some good news to help me into the season with a smile on my face. Sadly, doesn’t seem like that’s going to happen. GateWorld have posted that Torri Higginson definitely won’t be back for season 5 of Atlantis. Despite her rather ominous appearance at the end of Be All My Sins Rember’d.
By the sounds of things, it looks like the separation of Torri from Atlantis wasn’t a happy one, hence Torri not really willing to go back. But it’s all really speculation at the moment. It’s just very disappointing to see relationships go sour sometimes. And also disappointing to see what we won’t be seeing; the replicators being led by a very familiar face, giving us some much needed inner conflict for the characters during season 5.
Well I guess that’s the way of showbiz and TV and all that jazz. As an Atlantis fan, I can’t help but feel a little bit sad.

SyFy Portal - I Agree
February 8th, 2008 Filed Under Stargate: Atlantis News
SyFy Portal has just posted an article - Atlantis, Stop Trying to be like SG-1. It’s an article that I’m personally agreeing with, a lot. Especially recently. It talks about how succesful Torri Higginson was as Elizabeth Weir, in the command position of Atlantis:
Dr. Weir (Torri Higginson) on the other hand always kept the series moving and fresh and actually brought something to the table. As a chief negotiator, her skills were integral to the early days of the series where all things ancient were exciting and new. Higginson was perfect for the job and the series did suffer a substantial blow with absence in the latest season (even if she is lurking around somewhere in the background as a potential baddie).
I never used to be a fan of Weir, but the last couple of seasons she was in she really grew as a character and now I can really feel a void, now that she’s gone.
If you’re feeling the same way I do, especially after the not so thrilling Outcast, go have a read. You’ll find you’re definitely not alone.

Carter Out, Woolsey In
February 6th, 2008 Filed Under Stargate: Atlantis News
As production on the fifth season of Stargate: Atlantis begins, casting rumors have now seemed to have been made fact. It was widely known that Amanda Tapping would be stepping down as Samantha Carter, the commander of Atlantis. It’s now been confirmed that the new commander of Atlantis will be IOA official, Richard Woolsey, played by Richard Picardo.
I don’t know about you, but frankly I hate this idea. Well hate would be a strong word, but it’s very close to what I’m feeling on this. I’d rather have a rank outsider than Woolsey in commanding Atlantis, as it’s already been made clear what an utterly awful leader he’d make. He’s got no leadership skills.
Obviously I haven’t seen the last few episodes of the fourth season of Atlanits, which could make it so that the IOA are forced to come in and take control of the Atlantis expedition, but again I think that’s an awful idea.
Though at the same time I’m in agreement that John shouldn’t be made commander; again he hasn’t got the right credentials and I’d miss him as the action man. Someone like Weir was a good idea - an outsider but with the leadership skills to be able to take on such a post and have respect from the people under her. Woolsey certainly won’t be doing that.
Also the minor point that I find his character completely unbearable again makes me hate this idea. Well I’ll still be watching, with gritted teeth.
And back on track with new Atlantis casting news Amanda Tapping, Michael Shanks and Paul McGillion will all be appearing in a handful of episodes in the fifth season too, so maybe it won’t be all too bad!
